On a night dedicated to the creative masterminds of fashion and fearless style stars, guests of the 2014 CFDA Awards certainly made a statement on the event’s red carpet.
I loved the mix of long and short hems. And while the floor-length gowns looked beautiful as always, I couldn’t help be notice many of the short options were decidedly mod. Among the mini-skirted celebs were Marion Cotillard and Blake Lively, who attacked the trend fully with voluminous hair pushed back by a ribbon, a nude lip and a stack on bangles on her wrist. (I covered Blake Lively’s flawless Festival de Cannes red carpet style here.)
There was also a sparkle radiating from the event, in part from guests like Chanel Iman in a black embroidered Monique Lhuillier dress. But the star of the night was also clearly the most talked about on the red carpet. Rihanna turned heads in a custom Adam Selman gown covered in more than 200,000 Swarovski crystals. And yes, it was just about as sheer as Britney Spears circa “Toxic.”
Anne Wintour presented Rihanna with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award, saying, “It’s fun to feel a little boyish one day and dress up like a dazzling diva the next … The point is to be audacious, even jaw-dropping or button-pushing.” And Rihanna has certainly mastered that.
The Vogue editrice also touched on one of the reasons I have come to adore fashion. She began the presentation saying, “I am here tonight to talk about how Rihanna communicates through fashion, because of course, that is what style icons do. They tell us captivating stories, about themselves and about the world we live in, through the boldness and beauty of their clothes.”
Rihanna further demonstrated the reasons I love fashion saying, “I think fashion has been an outlet for me to express myself, to speak up, to say who I am and to be very loud about it at times, and I just like to have fun with it.”
Enough from me. Read the complete transcript from Anna Wintour and Rihanna from The Cut here, and read another outstanding article from ABC News here. The red carpet style speaks for itself, so here are my five favorite looks from the 2014 CFDA Awards.
